If you ask people, many will tell you they see their relationship with their hairdresser as special. I'm one of those.

Yesterday I had a haircut with Caroline, my longtime hairdresser. I’ve been going to the same hairdressing salon for more than ten years. This is where I met Caroline. If my estimate is correct, I may have met her maybe eighty times over these ten years. While it may not sound that many for such an extended period, over time, we built this ability to escape mundane talk quickly and easily connect on a more serious level. The kind of talks friends can have, I guess.

Over the years, we learned to know each other by sharing portions of our respective world, life, and experiences. We shared some personal stories, the kind of stories that made us smile or made us feel sad. We had a few things in common too. We talked about anything: travels, work, social issues, arts, tattoos, photography, and many more things. I know a bit about her and her immediate family, her parents. She knows a bit about my family too, my parents. Caroline has a funky look, always slightly different each time I see her. She’s cool and not afraid to try new things.

But yesterday was a special day. Caroline told me she was moving away to start her own hairdressing salon. That’s something she dreamed of for a long time, but I didn’t know or dare to ask. She had an opportunity that she couldn’t miss. At first, my reaction was one of surprise, but also one mixed with happiness and sadness. She seems thrilled about it. Good for her. She gave me her phone number, business address, and a quick smile, indicative of a promising future. I’m happy for her. I feel lucky to have met her and learned to know her. But is it time for me to move on too? Maybe. I tend to be loyal and stick to people I know best, but occasionally, it’s also cool to meet other people, find new stories, and learn new realities. I’ll move on, too. I'll remember her as someone special. I’m sure I’ll pay her a visit in the future. I’ll send her a link to this story to say hi and thank you.

“You are the sum of the people you meet and interact with in the world. Whether it’s your family, peers, or co-workers, the opportunities you have and the things that you learn all come through doors that other people open for you.” — Tanner Colby
