Automattic + Tumblr, Really?

I was a big user of Tumblr a few years ago

The news is out today, Automattic, the owner of the WordPress based hosting service, WordPress.com, is buying Tumblr for a “certain amount of money”. Really? I didn’t see this coming. Should we rejoice?

I was a big user of Tumblr back in 2010 as I hosted many of my micro-blogs on this platform. But eventually, Tumblr became greedy and ads were all over the place. I closed my account last year.

I can see some form of synergy for creatives and writers if this is well played by Automattic. Tumblr was more oriented toward imagery and WordPress is more about… words. As for SmugMug who bought Flickr last year, we are still looking for meaningful changes to Flickr. The jury is still out on this one. My hope is for Automattic to keep his focus on what WordPress.com has become over the years. I certainly don’t want them to borrow all of the bad stuff of Tumblr. We’ll see.
