For frequent visitors of this blog, you know that I’m a serious amateur photographer. My photo gear is quite simple but it just got a bit bigger. Here is my latest buy: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II.

Why this lens?

My camera is a Nikon D750 and my only lense is a Sigma Art 20mm. This lens is very impressive. For a certain type of urban photography or urban exploration, it great. But for going on vacation in places like Hawaii, I think I need a more versatile and powerful lens. Landscape photography in why open areas require a telephoto lens like this one. Even in cities if I want to take shots of people while I’m at a long distance from the subject.

I was looking for a versatile lens with a minimum of 70 mm focal length (great for portrait photography). The lens had to be at least 200 mm at maximum focal length yet fast, hence the F2.8 aperture. With its stabilization motor, I expect to gain 4 stops in low light conditions. Reviews are very good in general. This lens came out in 2009. It is a bit heavy so I’m getting a monopod to go with it. I’ll have to search which one I’ll buy. Maybe you could point me to a good one in the comment section at the end of this blog post? Let me know please.

Buying new or used?

I decided to buy a used lens as the price of a brand new one is quite steep. This is the first time that I chose to buy used gear. My hope is that I won’t regret it. The next time I’m going out for a photography session, I’ll test it and come back here to post a few shots. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, here is the kind of shot I’m looking to do with it.

  1. That is an impressive lens, congratulations with your buy!

New or used… for my Canon 77D I recently bought a used Canon 28-135 lens, of course after reading numerous reviews. It was a real bargain (which suits my budget) and in mint condition.
So yes, used gear, why not 🙂

    Looking forward to your photos!
